How a Diploma of Nursing Can Be a Stepping Stone to a Bachelor's Degree

Find out why so many students begin their Nursing Career with a Diploma

For many aspiring nurses, taking the pathway approach (starting with a Diploma before moving on to a Bachelor’s) is the smartest, most strategic way to launch their careers.

If you are ready to make your move, Queensford College has a few final spots remaining for our Diploma of Nursing for April 2026 at our Brisbane and Parramatta campuses.

Here is why starting with a Diploma isn't just a backup plan, it’s a career advantage.

1. Enter the Workforce (and Start Earning) Sooner

A Bachelor of Nursing takes three full years of study before you can register and start working. A Diploma of Nursing, however, can typically be completed in about 78 weeks at Queensford College. Once qualified, you become an Enrolled Nurse. This means you can step directly into the healthcare workforce, start gaining real-world clinical experience, and begin earning a professional salary much faster than your university peers.

2. Earn While You Learn

If your ultimate goal is to become a Registered Nurse by completing a Bachelor’s degree, having your Diploma first is a game-changer for your finances. Instead of working a minimum-wage hospitality or retail job to support yourself through university, you can work as a qualified Enrolled Nurse. You’ll be earning better pay while directly applying what you learn in your degree to your day-to-day job.

3. Build Unshakeable Clinical Confidence

University degrees are highly theoretical. By doing a Diploma first, your initial focus is heavily rooted in practical, hands-on patient care. When you eventually transition to a Bachelor’s program, you won't be intimidated by the clinical environment. You’ll already know how to handle patients, navigate hospital wards, and communicate with medical teams. You’ll be tackling advanced university theory with the solid foundation of a seasoned professional.

4. Fast-Track Your University Degree

Completing a Diploma of Nursing doesn't mean your journey to a Bachelor's takes longer. Most Australian universities offer generous credit transfers (often up to a full year's worth of credit) to students who hold a Diploma of Nursing. This means you can transition straight into the second year of a Bachelor's program, shaving significant time off your university studies.

5. Test the Waters

Nursing is an incredibly rewarding field, but it’s also demanding. A Diploma allows you to experience the realities of nursing care without committing to a full four-year university degree right out of the gate. It gives you the chance to confirm that nursing is your true passion while still earning a respected, standalone qualification.
