Readiness for Professional Practice

Students must ensure they are fully prepared for placement assessments by maintaining their health and well-being to support consistent attendance and active participation.

Physical and Mental Demands

Nursing involves diverse physical and mental challenges due to the complexity of clinical procedures, patient care scenarios, and the vulnerability of clients. Students must be capable of:

  • Performing activities that require a range of movements, such as bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Accurately interpreting written and verbal instructions.
  • Using complex medical equipment that requires fine motor skills.

Students who may struggle to meet these requirements should carefully consider their ability to complete the assessment to industry standards.

Health Considerations

Students should assess whether they have any physical or mental impairments, disorders, disabilities, or conditions that may impact their ability to demonstrate the required knowledge and skills in a professional setting. This includes impairments resulting from substance dependence or abuse. Any medical treatment must not hinder a student’s ability to engage in placement assessments professionally and with emotional maturity.

Students with sensory deficits or unmanaged medical conditions that could compromise safe practice and assessment outcomes must contact their vocational placement team to discuss their options regarding assessment and/or enrollment. While reasonable adjustments may be available in certain circumstances, assessment integrity and evidence requirements cannot be altered. Additionally, industry partners may have limited flexibility in accommodating specific needs.

Medical Clearance Requirements

If a student’s placement assessment is interrupted due to serious health concerns or chronic illness, they may be required to provide medical clearance before resuming their assessment.
